This webinar, presented by Gerard A. Baltazar, D.O., FACOS, FACS, will provide an evidence-based review of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) considerations for surgical patients and include practical approaches for adding OMT to acute surgical and perioperative management. The presenter will draw on the scientific literature and firsthand experience to illustrate opportunities for provision and study of OMT for the surgical patient population.

Webinar Series Description

The ACOS Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Series is an on-demand virtual series for all physicians whether you are at the beginning of your career or an experienced medical professional continuing your professional development. As you know, the medical world is rapidly changing. New advances in technology, care delivery, and scientific discoveries are happening at rates that make it challenging for learning practices across the field to keep up, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This three-module series will dive into the quality and safety of our health care system through research and implementation of evidence presented by Geeta Lal, MD, MSc FRCS(C), FACS.

Module 1: Surgical Site Infections (SSI): Beyond antibiotics On Call to OR

Session description

This session will provide an overview of the burden of SSI as a postoperative complication and review how SSI is defined by various bodies such as the CDC and ACS-NSQIP. It will also discuss the value of registries such as ACS-NSQIP in evaluating SSI rates to determine the need for quality improvement in this arena. The importance of reviewing the entire peri-operative period to identify issues that increase SSI risk will be emphasized. In addition, the utility of implementing bundled improvements, along with continuous monitoring and feedback, to maintain changes will also be reviewed.

1. Review the definition(s) of SSI
2. Discuss the use of American College of Surgeons - National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) to evaluate SSI data
3. Review guidelines and best practices for SSI reduction

Module 2: Social Media for Physicians - Rules of Engagement

Session Description

This session will provide a discussion how participating in social media can help healthcare professionals including assistance with recruitment, connecting with collaborators and practice building. It will also provide an overview of the most common social media platforms in use today, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Pros and cons of each platform for health care professionals and best practices for a successful online presence will be reviewed.

At the end of the session, the participate should be able to:

1. Review the reasons why health care professionals might consider being active on social media

2. Discuss the pros and cons of the various commonly used social media platforms

3. Review best practices for physicians on social media

Module 3: Surgical Practice in the times of COVID-19

Session Description

This session will review the data on post-operative outcomes of unexpected COVID-19 infected patients undergoing surgery and the case for testing patients prior to elective surgery. It will also review the American College of Surgeons post-COVID-19 guidelines for resuming surgery, including patient-surgeon discussions, facilities, and surgery-specific items. In addition, examples of the process of implementation of these recommendations at a tertiary hospital will be reviewed.

At the end of the session, the participate should be able to:

1. Understand the basis for recommendations to resume practice
2. Review the American College of Surgeons Post-COVID-19 Readiness checklist for Resuming surgery
3. Provide an overview of the implementation of these guidelines at a tertiary care center

Speaker

Geeta Lal, MD, MSc FRCS(C), FACS.

Dr. Lal is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Iowa, where she serves as Co-Leader of the Endocrine Multi-disciplinary Oncology Group (at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center) and Associate Chief Quality Officer and Director of In-patient Quality and Safety.

Her clinical interest is in endocrine surgery, with a focus in thyroid and parathyroid disease including pediatric thyroid cancer. She was an NIH-funded investigator with an interest in the role of ECM1 in thyroid, breast, and other malignancies. She has also authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. She is a member of The American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, The American Thyroid Association, The International Association of Endocrine Surgeons, and Society of University Surgeons. She is also actively involved in the Association for Women Surgeons.

CME

The American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. Eligible attending physicians can earn AOA continuing medical education (CME) credits by participating in this ACOS eLearning series. ACOS estimates that the AOA Council on Continuing Medical Education will approve this program for a maximum of 1.5 AOA Category 1-A CME credit hours.
