Resident Annual Reports and Completion Letters

The Resident Evaluation and Standards Committee (RESC) will meet on August 19 to review Resident Annual Reports and accredited programs for continuing approval and program completion. Almost 700 Resident Annual Reports are expected to be reviewed at that meeting.

As of August 1st the ACOS has received over 650 Resident Annual Reports and verified completion of only about 400+. The verification process is arduous, but all annual reports received will be reviewed. Residents whose annual reports are incomplete will be notified.

Resident annual report approval letters and program completion letters will be available to residents upon completion of that meeting, usually by the first week of September. The American Osteopathic Board of Surgery (AOBS) will accept the program’s verification that a resident has completed the training in order to apply for certification by the resident. Residents are urged to not contact the ACOS for your “Program Complete” letter. The AOBS will be notified of residents’ completion of their programs after the RESC meeting.

Surgical Educators Seminar

Program Directors and surgical residency teaching faculty are reminded to register for the Surgical Educators Seminar offered in conjunction with the ACOS Annual Clinical Assembly in Pheonix, AZ.  The Surgical Educators Seminar will be on Saturday, September 24th from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.  Program directors are required to attend the Educators Seminar at least once every two years.

After more than two years of conversations, on February 26, 2014 the AOA announced that the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) had agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding to create a new “Unified Accrediting Body.”  On July 1, 2015 osteopathic training programs were able to apply for ACGME accreditation.  Since that time, almost half of ACOS Surgical Residency Programs have applied and received pre-accreditation status with ACGME. But what are the next steps towards initial accreditation with ACGME and beyond? This Session will be devoted to the process of receiving the next step, initial accreditation, and assisting programs to reach that goal.

This Surgical Educators Seminar will be devoted to the process of ACGME accreditation, ACGME requirements and the ACGME process.  Program Directors, DMEs and program coordinators are encouraged to attend this most important workshop. Presenters for this session will be Donna L. Lamb, MBA, BSN, Mandip Atwal, D.O., FACOS, Philip Ginsberg, D.O., FACOS.
