Annual Resident Reports Due June 30

Annual Resident Reports for the 2017-2018 training year must be submitted to the ACOS no later than June 30, 2018. More than 600 individual resident reports are expected to be submitted and reviewed by the Residency Evaluation and Standards Committee (RESC). ACOS staff will conduct an initial review of the reports to ensure their completeness, clarity and compliance. Following this initial review, the RESC will meet in August to finalize the review. Components of the Annual Resident Report include submissions from both the resident and program director. If your individual annual report is incomplete, necessary notifications will be sent. For more information or to submit your Annual Resident Report, visit www.facos.org/annualreports.

Residents and/or program directors who require additional information or have questions regarding Annual Resident Reports should contact Resident and Program Services Manager Jessika Brown.

2019 In-Service Exam Test Construction Meeting

On May 11th, members of the General Surgery In-Service Exam Committee met at the NBOME headquarters in Chicago to review and finalize the 2019 In-Service Examination. The purpose of the exam is to assist program directors in the evaluation of a resident’s level of knowledge relative to other residents' knowledge at the same level of training, to identify a resident’s area of weakness, and track a resident’s progress. There is no passing score for the exam, which is a diagnosis-oriented, criterion-referenced achievement test that measures the degree to which residents have mastered the General Surgery Residency Model Curriculum.

Resident Section

Resident Section Officers, Chair and Chair-Elect, Alice Higdon, DO and Daniel Edwards, DO are leading the charge to enhance the experience of surgical residents' contributions to research, publishing and awards. To support this initiative, Drs. Higdon and Edwards have proposed the creation of a new position on the Resident Section Council: Research Ambassador. The proposed role of Research Ambassador is essential to foster the creation, dissemination and recognition of research within the field of osteopathic surgery, specifically from the perspective of surgical residents. There will be a vote on this position during the Resident Section meeting at the October 2018 Annual Clinical Assembly (ACA) in Atlanta, GA. We will begin accepting nominations for the proposed position in July, in advance of the Annual Meeting. More information about the position and the ACOS Resident Section Officer nominations will follow.
