General Surgery In-Service Exam

Registration for the 2019 General Surgery In-Service Exam is due. Registration is conducted through the NBOME on-line portal. If you are a coordinator and need help accessing the system, please contact [email protected]. The exam will be administered on Saturday, January 12, 2019, 8:00 am to 12:00 pm to all residents in ACOS/AOA accredited general surgery training programs. ACGME Application Deadline

The deadline for one- and two-year surgery programs to apply for ACGME accreditation is December 31, 2018! Programs that do not submit the ACGME Application prior to the deadline will not be able to participate in the 2019 Match and will be unable to accept new residents (including transfers). The AOA GME accreditation team is providing assistance to programs that need support to complete the ACGME application. For more information, contact 312.202.8272 or email [email protected].

2018- 2019 Resident Section Governing Council

The Annual Resident Section Business Meeting was held on Thursday, October 18, 2018 in conjunction with the Annual Clinical Assembly at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, GA. Alice Higdon, D.O., facilitated the meeting. She is a recent program complete from St. John Episcopal Hospital and the 17-18 Chair of the Resident Section.

More than 25 residents and fellows were in attendance. During the meeting, attendees were updated on current ACOS business, discussed emerging issues and participated in the elections of the 18-19 Resident Section Officers. Mandip Atwal, DO, FAOCS, Chair of the Resident Section Governing Council (RESC), addressed the residents, providing information on the status of single accreditation and managing expectations going forward. Nelayda Fonte, DO, FACOS, Chair of the In-Depth Review Committee, informed attendees of the great benefits of attending the In-depth Review Board Review course.

The Research Ambassador Officer position was explained by 17-18 chair-elect, Daniel Edwards D.O., and was voted in unanimously by all in attendance.

Elections were then held for the 2018-2019 Resident Section Governing Council and the following officers were elected:

Research Ambassador | Paulette Cutruzzula Dreher, D.O., OGME-2 Urological Surgery Resident from Hahnemann University Hospital

Daniel Edwards, D.O., OGME-4 Urological Surgery Resident from Hahneman University Hospital was elected Chair-elect last year in Washington, DC and will serve as chair of the Resident Section and as the resident representative to the ACOS Board of Governors for 2018-2019.
