ACOS awarded the 2026 Charles L. Ballinger Distinguished Osteopathic Surgeon Award to Phillip C. Ginsberg, D.O., J.D., FACOS.
Dr. Phillip Ginsberg is the Former Chairman of the Division of Urology at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and Clinical Professor of Urology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. After graduating from PCOM, he completed a general surgical residency and urological surgical residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center. He had additional training in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and in pediatric urology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In addition to his responsibilities as Chairman of Urology, he is the Former Urology Residency Program Director at Albert Einstein. He served for three years as the President of the Medical Staff at Einstein, having chaired the institution wide quality performance committee for five years prior. He is past president of the ACOS Urology Discipline and a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. In this role, he served on the ACOS Residency Evaluation and Standards Committee and the Bylaws Committee, as well as serving as an ACOS mentor for future surgeons. As Clinical Professor of Urology, he actively participates in the education of medical students from both PCOM and Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Ginsberg has been a member of the ACOS and its Urology Discipline since 1980. He is a member of the American Urological Association, the Mid-Atlantic AUA, and the Philadelphia Urology Society. In addition, he maintains membership in the American College of Legal Medicine and the Philadelphia Medical Society. Dr. Ginsberg has authored multiple articles and book chapters which have been published in peer-reviewed journals. He is in the private practice of urology, with offices in Northeast Philadelphia and at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Ginsberg graduated from the Temple University School of Law in 1995 and is a licensed Pennsylvania attorney, practicing part time in Healthcare Law. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Healthcare Law section of the ABA as well as a fellow in the American College of Legal Medicine. Currently, Dr. Ginsberg is the Student Clerkship Director for the Urology Residency Program at Einstein; In addition, he is a core faculty member of the Einstein Urology Program and continues to teach urology residents and students in the operating room and clinic. He has signed residency completion certificates for more than 100 graduating urology residents during his tenure as urology program director.
Dr. Ginsberg is married to Beth, has two beautiful children, Rachel and Joshua, and has four amazing grandchildren, Hudson, London, Austin, and Jordan. He is thankful every day for the love and support he receives from his family, residents and friends.
The Distinguished Osteopathic Surgeon Award, established in 1972 by the Board of Governors, is awarded annually to an ACOS member in recognition of outstanding accomplishments and leadership in the field of surgery. Following the death of Charles L. Ballinger in 1974, the award has been presented in his memory, honoring his legacy and enduring contributions to the profession. This distinguished honor celebrates excellence across clinical practice, education, and research, recognizing surgeons whose impact extends throughout their communities and the broader surgical field. The award is formally presented during the Ceremonial Conclave at the Annual Clinical Assembly.
