Promoting Excellence in Osteopathic Surgical Care
The American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) was established January 26, 1927.
Our history began during an AOA conference in Louisville, KY, when a small group of surgeons opted to share a mission to set high education standards and provide continuing medical education to osteopathic surgeons.
Today, these beliefs continue to be our driving force.

Governing Documents
Carved from our rich history and proud visions for the future, ACOS founders developed our Articles of Incorporation to set forth our purpose and how we will be governed, in general, as an association.
College operations and detailed rules for governance are outlined in the College Bylaws that are modified as approved by the Board of Governors.
College Structure
The Board of Governors may authorize and dissolve surgical disciplines for the College for the study and advancement of any specialties of osteopathic surgery and special sections.
A surgical specialty or section with adequate numerical representation as determined by the Board shall submit to the Board of Governors for approval the bylaws for the specialty discipline or section. The bylaws shall be consistent with the bylaws, policies, and procedures of the College. The administration of each surgical discipline or section shall in no way conflict with the overall objectives, ideals, and functions of the College.
Membership in a surgical discipline shall be open to any member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons practicing in that specialty. Membership in a special section only may be open to members of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. Membership privileges for a surgical discipline or section shall be the same as those granted members in the College.
Sections exist for Resident and Student Members. Members in the military can participate in the Military Members Forum.
